How Quicken Simplifi Calculates Your Balance

Quicken Simplifi is designed to count pending transactions toward your balance; this includes manually entered pending transactions with the current or a prior date, as well as downloaded pending transactions. This allows you to get a better idea of how much money you actually have in your bank accounts, as banks typically provide a balance that does not include pending transactions.

Example: If your bank reports your current checking account balance as $1000 and you have a pending transaction of $150, Quicken Simplifi will show the account balance as $850.

Note: Manually entered transactions marked as Cleared do not affect the balance for connected accounts.

Note: While we work hard to ensure that we display the most up-to-date information, it can take 4-6 hours after appearing on your bank's website before pending transactions appear in Quicken Simplifi.

Balance Options

If you'd prefer to not have Quicken Simplifi count pending transactions toward your balance, or if your bank provides a balance that already includes pending transactions and Quicken Simplifi is double-counting them, you can easily disable this feature!

Troubleshooting Balance Discrepancies

If you notice a difference between your bank balance and the balance Quicken Simplifi shows for a connected account, there may be two possible causes: pending transactions or downloading the wrong balance.

Pending Transactions

Pending transactions or past due reminders in Pending status will impact the balance on connected accounts. This is because Quicken Simplifi calculates your balance by counting any pending transactions, both manually entered and downloaded, toward your current bank balance.

  • Example 1: If your bank reports your current checking account balance as $1000 and you have a pending transaction in Quicken Simplifi (with the current or a prior date) for $150, Quicken Simplifi will show the account balance as $850.

  • Example 2: If your bank reports your current checking account balance as $1000 and you have an $80 recurring transaction reminder that shows as Pending in your transaction activity, Quicken Simplifi will show the account balance as $920.

You may also notice a difference in balance if there are pending transactions on your bank's end that have not yet been downloaded into Quicken Simplifi. While we work hard to ensure we display the most up-to-date information, it can take 4-6 hours after appearing on your bank's website for pending transactions to download into Quicken Simplifi.

Note: Some banks do not support the downloading of pending transactions, such as USAA and Capital One.

How can this be resolved?

If you notice pending transactions in Quicken Simplifi that have already cleared your bank account, try manually refreshing your accounts in Quicken Simplifi. You can do this by hovering over the menu on the left-hand side of the Quicken Simplifi Web App and selecting Refresh, or by clicking the refresh icon in the upper right of the Quicken Simplifi Mobile App Dashboard.

If the pending transaction remains, it's possible that Quicken Simplifi didn't match the cleared transaction to the pending instance. You can confirm this by checking your Transaction Activity in Quicken Simplifi for a duplicate, cleared transaction. If Quicken Simplifi did download the cleared transaction as expected, but the pending instance remains, we recommend deleting the pending version of the transaction. Once deleted, your balance should automatically adjust. Please see our support article here for steps to delete a transaction in Quicken Simplifi.

For past due recurring transactions, if the matching transaction already cleared your account and downloaded into Quicken Simplifi, you can link the two transactions. For instructions on how to link recurring transactions, visit our Support Article here!

Wrong Balance Downloading

Since most banks don't include pending transactions in the current balance, counting pending transactions provides you with a better idea of how much money you actually have in your bank account. However, if the balance we're receiving from the bank already includes pending transactions, balance discrepancies can result, as Quicken Simplifi will double-count the pending transactions.

How can this be resolved?

Once the pending transactions have cleared, the balance should correct itself. However, you can disable Quicken Simplifi from counting pending transactions in the balance so they're not being double-counted by following the steps above.

Note: For manual accounts, Quicken Simplifi calculates the balance by using the sum of all of the transactions that have been entered into the account. Therefore, regardless of the status, all transactions in a manual account will impact the balance. If you are seeing a discrepancy with your balance in your manual account, click here!
