Overview

Planned Spend is typically used to budget for items that fluctuate each month, such as gas and groceries. A lot of users find it beneficial to roll over the underspent or overspent amount for these types of budgeted items from month to month, so we have added the ability to do so in Quicken Simplifi! Below, you can learn all about Planned Spend Rollover!

For more details on using Planned Spend or the Spending Plan in general, please see our article here!

Things to Note:

  • Rollover can only be enabled for a Planned Spend Series.

  • The Rollover feature can only be seen and changed in current and future months.

  • Planned Spend series with Rollover enabled will use the targeted amount when calculating your Spending Plan totals so that the Available amount of your Spending Plan isn’t impacted.

    • The Rollover amount will be reflected in the following month for that individual Planned Spend series.

  • When Rollover is enabled for a Planned Spend series, you’ll no longer have the option to release your available funds. The available funds will instead be moved to the next month.

    • Auto-release will not apply to Planned Spend series set up for Rollover.

  • For Planned Spend series that are not set up for rollover, the calculations will stay the same.

    • Overspending will be counted toward the Spending Plan totals.

    • Underspending will use the target amount unless the leftover funds are released.

Enable Rollover for a Planned Spend Series

Whether the Planned Spend Series already exists in Quicken Simplifi or you're creating a new Planned Spend Series, you can access the rollover feature by navigating to the Spending Plan and then selecting Planned Spend.

Once rollover is enabled for a Planned Spend expense, you will see an icon indicating such. The progress bar of the expense will also be updated to reflect the rollover amount, and you can use the info icon to see a breakdown of what was originally planned, the rollover amount used, what's been spent, and what's remaining.

Enable Rollover for an existing Planned Spend Series

  1. Locate the existing Planned Spend expense and tap the three dots to the upper right of it.

  2. Select Edit expense series.

  3. Use the Roll over funds each month toggle to enable rollover for this expense.

  4. If you'd like to start the expense with a previous rollover amount, enter the amount in the Opening rollover field.

  5. Tap Update when done.

Enable Rollover while creating a new Planned Spend Series

  1. Tap the plus (+) button in the upper right.

  2. Select Recurring.

  3. Fill out the information, such as the Category, Amount, and an optional Name.

    • If an optional Name is not entered, the Name of the expense will be the Category that's used.

  4. Use the Roll over funds each month toggle to enable rollover for this expense.

  5. If you'd like to start the expense with a previous rollover amount, enter the amount in the Opening rollover field.

  6. Tap Create when done.

Change a Rollover Amount

You can change the rollover amount in the current month, which essentially clears the rollover value for that month. You can change the amount to $0 or any value of your choice (positive or negative).

  1. Locate the Planned Spend expense and tap the three dots to the upper right of it.

  2. Select Change rollover amount.

  3. Enter the new Rollover amount.

  4. Tap Update when done.
