Overview

When you share the cost of something—like splitting a restaurant bill with friends or dividing the price of a joint purchase—it can be tricky to track how much you actually spent yourself. Quicken Simplifi helps by giving you clear ways to record only your true portion of the expense while keeping your spending and reports accurate.

This article explains the easiest methods for handling Shared Expenses in Simplifi, depending on whether someone pays you back in cash or via online transfer.

Note: You cannot split expense transactions to include an income transaction and vice versa.

For Cash Payment

If someone reimburses you with physical cash, create a manual transaction for the cash amount and assign it the same category as the original purchase you’re splitting.

This keeps your account balance accurate and correctly reflects the cash payment you received.

For Online Transfer

If you’re reimbursed through a service like Cash App, Zelle, or another online transfer, simply categorize the incoming transaction using the same category as the original shared purchase.

This ensures your spending reports show the full purchase under the correct category while also reducing your actual out-of-pocket cost.

When You’re Paying Someone Back

If someone else paid for the full purchase, to record your share, you should only enter the amount you reimbursed them—not the total purchase.

  • If you paid in cash: create a manual expense transaction for the amount you paid and assign the same category as the original purchase.

  • If you paid via online transfer: when the transaction downloads into Quicken Simplifi, simply categorize it using the same category as the shared purchase.

This ensures your Spending Plan and reports reflect only your share of the cost.
